How
do I earn a risk management discount?
All physicians who want the Risk Management Discount added to their
premium must complete the UMIA Online Education curriculum for his/her
specialty once every three years. Physicians who have been insured
by UMIA over 10 years without a paid claim over $50,000 receive
the Risk Management Discount automatically. Those physicians in
the specialties of psychiatry, dermatology (Class 1), radiation
oncology (Class 3), and pathology must submit proof of CME attendance
at a risk related program provided by their specialty group to receive
the discount.
Physicians receiving a "New Practitioner" discount (defined
as new to the practice of medicine) have one year from the effective
date of coverage to complete the UMIA Online Education curriculum
for their speciality to maintain the discount. The discount expires
after one year without program completion.

If I have a claim, who assigns my attorney
or do I get to pick my own?
UMIA will assign you an attorney from a group of experienced and
knowledgeable medical liability defense attorneys who have a proven
record with our company. You may hire your own attorney to advise
you on various issues as defense of your claim moves forward. The
cost of your personal attorney is not covered by UMIA.

What constitutes a claim?
The word “claim” has various meanings depending on who
is doing the talking. For example, for the UMIA claim department,
a claim is when you receive a 90-day Notice of Intent, a subpoena,
or a demand from an attorney or patient for money. These events
result in a file being opened for the “claim” and assignment
of an attorney.
For risk management purposes and loss free credits, a claim is any
paid event over $50,000.
For application purposes, such as for medical staff membership,
a claim may be any report of intent to sue even though no formal
claim resulted. For application purposes, it is best to list any
event that created a record, for example, as with the professional
licensing board for a pre-litigation hearing, even though there
was never a formal claim.
For the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), any “claim”
is a claim in which money was paid to the claimant. Payments made
under the “no fault” provision of the UMIA policy are
not reportable to the NPDB.
