Risk Management Education

The UMIA and its physician directors are committed to providing policyholders with a high quality, innovative Risk Management Program. Policyholders can qualify for a risk management discount and earn CME credits in one of two ways:

UMIA Online Education: View risk management presentations, earn CME credit and qualify for your risk management discount from the comfort of your own home.

UMIA Live Risk Management Workshops: Offered on several weekends during the year, risk management seminars allow you to view live presentations in order to earn CME credit, interact with other UMIA insured physicians and ask questions regarding risk management.

Target Audience

The UMIA CME efforts are primarily focused on our company’s current insured physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants practicing in Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes presentations on critical communication concepts, general risk management principles, and breakout sessions for the following specialties:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Family Practice Medicine
  • Internal Medicine / Internal Medicine Subspecialties
  • Obstetrics/Gynecology and Family Practice Medicine with Obstetrics
  • Pediatrics
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Subspecialties

Physicians not in one of the specialties listed above will be directed to the most appropriate specialty courses. Participation in the Risk Management Education Program is available only to physicians and physician extenders currently insured by UMIA.

Purpose & Objectives

The UMIA is committed to improving health care through the provision of high-quality continuing medical education (CME) to our insureds. The overall goal of the UMIA CME program is to provide CME activities that will address the professional practice gaps of our physician learners by facilitating change in participants’ competence, performance, and improved patient outcomes.

Purpose

The purpose of these workshops is listed below:

  • To define causes of malpractice claims.
  • To develop and enhance physician communication skills.
  • To provide data collection tools and patient encounter forms that assist in the reduction of patient injury and misdiagnosis.
  • To identify and recommend efficient data management systems to collect, organize and document critical patient-related data and information.

Objectives

Following is a list of objectives for the workshop.

  • To examine the root causes of medical liability claims including the role of human cognitive errors.
  • To promote the development and enhancement of effective physician communication skills.
  • To re-enforce the critical role of accurate and adequate patient data collection and management tools.
  • To recommend ways to reduce the role of human error and distraction to reduce patient injury.
  • To identify specialty specific loss trends and high-risk areas.
  • To provide specialty specific risk management strategies to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors.
