Risk Management Education

The UMIA and its physician directors are committed to providing policyholders with a high quality, innovative Risk Management Program. New in 2008, policyholders can qualify for a risk management discount and earn CME credits in one of two ways:

1. UMIA Online Education: View risk management presentations, earn CME credit and qualify for your risk management discount from the comfort of your own home.

2. UMIA Risk Management Weekend Workshops: Offered on several weekends during the year, risk management seminars allow you to view live presentations in order to earn CME credit.

Objectives

The objectives of UMIA Risk Management Education are:

  • To examine the root causes of medical liability claims including the role of human cognitive errors
  • To promote the development and enhancement of effective physician communication skills

  • To recommend ways to reduce the role of human error and distraction to reduce patient injury
  • To identify specialty specific loss trends and high-risk areas
  • To provide specialty specific risk management strategies to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors

Curriculum

The curriculum includes presentations on critical communication concepts, general risk management principles, and breakout sessions for the following specialties:

  • Anesthesiology

Attendance Policy

Children:
Out of respect for other attendees, and because some Risk Management Workshop topics may be sensitive or inappropriate for children, the UMIA Risk Management staff request that attendees not bring their children to the Risk Management workshop. Should last minute circumstances make it impossible for you to make arrangements for child care, you will be re-scheduled for a future workshop.

Spouses and Guests:
Because data that is presented at Risk Management workshops involves actual UMIA data, the company requests that only insured physicians or approved office staff attend. It is inappropriate for spouses, family or friends to join a physician at the workshop.

FULL WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE:
Full participation in the workshop is required to qualify for the Risk Management premium discount. Physicians with partial attendance will receive CME credit commensurate with their attendance but will not receive the risk management discount.
